Typical Seasons in NW Arkansas

Spring....

Spring in NW Arkansas is usually very chilly to start, but you can feel summer's oppressive temperatures at the end. March is usually a chilly month with a few snow flakes not uncommon in early march. For example March 2nd 2002 there were 3 inches of snow on the ground at the high temperature was 20 degrees. Late March and early April is when the trees begin to bud and bloom . May is usually stormy and cool, intermixed with very warm summer-like days, 90 degree days not out of the question

Summer......

Summer-like heat really begins in late June with 80s and 90s not uncommon. July into early August is the heart and soul of an NW Arkansas summer. Temperatures are at coolest in the high 80s and usually in the low 90s for daily high temperatures. Moist summers are much more oppressive than dry summers, even though the temperatures are somewhat cooler. A dry summer will feature temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s, but it will feel better outside. There is usally a break from the 90s and 100s in late August, but when we say break we mean a high temperature of about 84. Semptember is usually another hot summer month, but typically not as hot as August. Upper 80s are typical of September. Late September may offer a few days in the 70s.

Autumn......

Autumn in NW Arkansas begins in early October, with temperatures usually in the mid 70s, although by the end of the month there may be some days in the mid-60s. Warmer days in the 80s are fairly common from time to time in October as well. The trees may exhibit signs of colorful change by mid-October but are still far from peak. By around October 31 the trees are still not at peak but not too far off. November is the heart and soul of autumn in NW Arkansas. The trees are usually at peak in the 1st week of November. November features daytime highs in the mid 60s, with a few days of 50s and maybe late in the month a few days with highs in the 40s. A hard freeze can be counted on as being experienced by the entire area by Nov 15th. Snow flurries are a possibility some years by late November.

Winter.........

Winter in NW Arkansas causes area meteorologists lots of stress as it is the hardest season to predict weather in. December can vary greatly from year to year some years being cold, some years being warm. Mid 50s and upper 40s are fairly common. Days with highs in the 30s are also a possibility, also are days in the upper 60s to around 70. Ice and snow storms can occur in December but arent all that common. The mountains of NW Arkansas often block the shallow cold air masses from the North keeping most winter weather along and north of Interstate 44 in Oklahoma and Missouri. January is typically one of the cooler winter months with highs in the mid 40s typical, snow storms can occur in January, but arent all that common. Late January is typically the coldest part of the month with days in the mid 30s not out of the question. February is similiar to January but ususally colder. As the heart and soul of Arkansas' winter this is the month where snow or ice snows are most likely to occur. Early March can also be on the chilly side before spring begins
